Kirk Patrick Giezey died Thursday when he was run over by a bulldozer at a Newport News construction site, the Daily Press reported.

Giezey, 34, was helping clear a new road near the 200 block of Eastwood Drive when he was killed, according to WAVY-TV. Giezey was working for E.W. Muller Contractor Inc.

A Newport News Police Department spokeswoman said Giezey was riding in the scooper on a front-end loader that was being driven by another worker. He somehow ended up outside of the scooper and was run over.

The construction work was part of the planned Heather Heights community, WVEC-TV reported.

The incident was being investigated by the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry, according to The Virginian-Pilot.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends a number of precautions to avoid construction work site accidents. They include:

– Check vehicles before each shift to assure that all parts and accessories are safe

– Drive only on surfaces/roadways that are safely constructed and maintained

– Make sure personnel are in the clear before using dumping or lifting devices

– Do not carry personnel unless there is a safe place to ride
